The Best Conference You've Never Heard Of

It is less than one month away until the 2013 Summer Brand Camp in Dallas, TX. This is a conference that I must attend each year and here's why:

1. Genuine support for attendees
The pay-it-forward passion that you feel the moment you arrive at Brand Summer Camp is inspirational. The conference hosts and alumni proactively make each attendee feel welcome.

2. Gain insight into real-world solutions
At previous Summer Brand Camps, I learned from executives who shared how they overcame personal hardships to reach their professional goals. You connect with leaders and attendees in a transparent and non-judgemental way that isn't offered at other events.

3. Unique speakers and sessions
The restaurant, retail, and healthcare industry's biggest stars and brands lead sessions that are filled with success stories, actionable items, and data. Check out this year's agenda: http://www.summerbrandcamp.com/agenda.

4. Memories that last a lifetime
The memories and friendships that I made at Summer Brand Camp have helped me through difficult times all year 'round.

To attend Summer Brand Camp, you must be a Restaurant, C-store, Retail or Healthcare operator. If you have any questions, email Melissa Papaleo at melissa.papaleo@prbbi.com. Hope to see you there!

Stop Feeling the Post SXSW Interactive Blues

This was my fourth year in a row attending SXSW.

When I return home to a life and work that I love, there is a sinking feeling inside.

I miss the non-stop networking, events, sessions, photos with tech's finest like Robert Scoble (yes, that is us in the photo), social media interaction, swag, and more.

If you are a little down after leaving SXSW, here are some ideas to get your mojo back:

  • Meet with a friend who didn't attend SXSW. Think of the connections that you made that could benefit this person. Make those introductions.

  • Thank someone who helped make your time in Austin better. Find a thoughtful way to pay-it-forward.

  • Follow up with any new connections. Set calls in a few weeks to see how you can help each other.

  • Start planning your bucket list for SXSW next year. Maybe you'd like to speak on a panel or host your own event. Dream big and hustle like Gary V.

  • Remember, many people want to attend this event and don't get the opportunity. Be grateful and pass along what you learned to others.

What are some additional ways to beat the post SXSW Interactive blues?

Help End Childhood Hunger in America. Yes, America.

Many of my most prized childhood memories while growing up in Iowa involve food. I think back to Thanksgiving, sweet corn days, and other family events symbolized by a home cooked meal. I was lucky that even when times were tough; there was always food for our family to eat.

It is hard to imagine growing up in America being hungry. One in five children in the U.S. struggles with hunger. Kids tell us what hunger feels like:

Help by dining out at participating restaurants: http://dineout.nokidhungry.org/maps.

Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in this nation by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day.

The funds raised through Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry support its work connecting kids in need with nutritious food and teaching their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. Let's help create positive memories and a brighter future for these children in need and their families. Click to find out ways you can help: http://www.nokidhungry.org.

Coca-Cola Racing Invites You To A Twitter Viewing Party

Social media brings fans together. It makes events more rewarding for those who are in attendance or watching at home. Since I am not at Daytona International Speedway, this weekend I’m watching the Coke Zero 400 at a NASCAR Hall of Fame viewing party in Charlotte, NC. My friends at Coca-Cola Racing are inviting all NASCAR fans to join in the fun by throwing our own viewing parties to see how real NASCAR fans watch a race.

Before and during the race tomorrow, tweet @CocaColaRacing live videos and photos of your #NASCAR viewing party using the #MYCOKERACE hashtag. Coca-Cola Racing is giving away a special race day prize pack to one of my followers which may include: a Coca-Cola branded Grandstands Cooler, a Coca-Cola branded Recycling Koozie to keep your drink chilled, and a Coca-Cola Racing cap!

In order to be considered for this giveaway, follow these steps:
1.  Follow @CocaColaRacing on Twitter: http://twitter.com/cocacolaracing.

2.  Tweet a photo of you watching the #CokeZero400 #NASCAR race with the hashtag #MYCOKERACE.

Make it a race day to remember!

Brad Keselowski’s Checkered Flag Foundation Announces Program for Wounded Vets

MOORESVILLE, NC (April 20, 2012) – Brad Keselowski's No. 19 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge Ram will highlight a proactive veterans hiring program during this weekend's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway.

Driving for his own team, Brad Keselowski Racing, Keselowski's hood will carry the message of Waste Management's proactive veteran hiring program. In addition to being the nation’s largest environmental services provider, with approximately 44,300 employees, Waste Management is also a leader in recruiting and hiring veterans, which is what attracted Keselowski to the program.

"About 1 in 12 employees at Waste Management are veterans and the organization is consistently recognized to be military friendly," Keselowski said. "It made sense to me to highlight their hiring program through my foundation, which works to support those who have sacrificed for the rest of us. As more and more men and women leave their respective branch of service proudly after serving long tours away from their families and friends, it's good to know that there are organizations like Waste Management that proactively seek to hire them upon their return.

About 3,500 veterans currently work for Waste Management. The organization has been named top Military Friendly employer by "G.I. Jobs Magazine," "Military Times," and the Department of Defense.

A veteran himself, Wes Reel, staffing manager with Waste Management said, “I have always loved being part of a winning team, which is why I loved serving in the military before I joined Waste Management. When I wore the uniform of the United States Navy, I worried that nothing could ever replace the mission and purpose I felt by serving my country. I now take great pride in being a small part of a company that is helping to change the world by making our environment better.

"We are actively seeking veterans to fill roles at all levels of the organization, from the Operational Front Line to the Corporate Headquarters," Reel continued. "A partnership with The Checkered Flag Foundation brings us one step closer to its goal of remaining a best place to work for veterans."

Brad Keselowski's Checkered Flag Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports those who have sacrificed for us, including military, veterans, first responders and their families, among others. Introducing Jobgram: An Infographic for Recruiting

Paul Jacobs and I met at Google a few years ago. He made the trip from New Zealand and led a session called, "The Death of Job Boards". Needless to say, I've always been interested in his perspective. I walked away from his session believing that job boards would survive, however, that passive candidates need more than a job description before they apply.

Paul reached out to me regarding his newest venure, Jobgram. Jobgram is a visual infographic of a career opportunity. I found it to be engaging. Here is a Jobgram highlighting an Operational opening for a Technician (Mechanic) with my employer, Waste Management. What do you think?

The Most Influential NASCAR Related Twitter Accounts

There are over 13,000 Twitter accounts with bios that contain the word, NASCAR. Over the past few years, we've seen an increase in NASCAR accounts from drivers, drivers’ loved ones, spotters, media professionals, fans, crew chiefs, pit crewmembers, racetracks, sponsors and fans.

Inanimate objects accounts are on Twitter for race-related items like The Orange Cone. There are also a handful of fake parody accounts featuring NASCAR executives, drivers and even their beards.

According to Klout, here are the most influential NASCAR related Twitter accounts and their bios for the past 90 days:

1. @NASCAR - Official news and information on races, drivers, teams and industry events

2. @KevinHarvick - Driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet in the Sprint Cup Series for Richard Childress Racing

3. @mw55 – (Michael Waltrip) – NASCAR fan

4. @DennyHamlin - Driver of the #11 FedEx Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

5. @RyanNewman39 - NASCAR driver of the #39 US Army/Haas Automation/Tornados Chevrolet

10. @BrianLVickers – Never Give Up

You may get an update on this list by visiting Klout at http://klout.com/#/topic/nascar.  The Klout score measures influence based on your ability to drive action. This list was created by Klout to determine online influence over a specific topic, NASCAR. Klout judges quality of content by the reactions it produces, not if the reaction is negative or positive. Some of the accounts above may create more negative, than positive responses with their tweets.

Please note, a Klout score is a single social media metric and may drastically change once the season starts or other NASCAR notables start tweeting. Notice that the Twitter accounts with the most followers, does not necessarily mean that they have the most influence online or offline.

From Talent Acquisition To Corporate Communications

In June of 2009, I attended ERE's Social Recruiting Summit at Google in Mountain View, CA. The speakers, sessions, attendees, conversations and inspiring location reinforced my desire for a career in social media. It was the first time that I coordinated a tweetup. At the time, I was a recruiter for an agency with co-workers and a boss who were like family to me. There were many talented recruiters who were out of work. I debated if I was ungrateful for my current employment and if it was the right time to take a risk to follow my passions.

In the end, I had to follow my heart, face my fears and take calculated risks towards my professional goals. Through meetings with trusted colleagues, mentors and industry leaders, I left recruiting to focus full-time on delivering social media training and solutions. Since then, I've had many personal and professional successes and failures. Earlier this year, I joined Waste Management (WM), a Fortune 200 corporation with 1500 job openings in the U.S. and Canada.

Today, I'm grateful to announce another transition. I've accepted a new role within WM. My title is Manager, Social Media. I'm part of an extraordinary Corporate Communications team. It is bittersweet, since I truly enjoyed working on a daily basis with the first-class Talent Acquisition group at WM. Now I am responsible for all social media platforms, monitoring for our internal and external communication channels and engaging target audiences. It is an honor to represent Waste Management during the company's time of transformational change and growth. I am humbled and indebted for the innovative leadership driving positive change at WM.

Thank you to my friends, colleagues, mentors and family for their unconditional support. I wish you and your loved ones a prosperous and healthy 2012. Keep paying it forward!

Pay It Forward with a Free iPad2

After making a donation to Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry charity, I was entered in a drawing to win an iPad2 from Cinnabon, Inc. Surprisingly, I was the lucky winner. Now I have the opportunity to pay it forward with your help.

Post a comment below as to who you think deserves this iPad2 and why (less than 500 words please). Comments must be posted by 5:00pm (Eastern) on Monday, October 10th, 2011 to be considered.

Please note that this is not an official sweepstakes and not affliated with my employer. I'm personally selecting one person's recommendation on who should get this iPad2. The person who receives the 3G 32G White Verizon iPad2 will be responsible for all charges to get it set up with Verizon Wireless.

Thanks again to Cinnabon for this fun way to pay it forward.

Find the Best Solutions Through Team Collaboration

At work, I'm grateful to partner with collaborative colleagues guided by a management team that is determined to transform our company. Here are some tips on how to help your team work together better to uncover opportunities:

1. Hold team meetings to discuss new opportunities and delegate next steps.
After a team meeting to share ways to improve your organization, assign action steps to investigate or implement those ideas with a specific timeline. Stop the cycle of indecisive meetings without effective decisions. If your leadership doesn't show interest in these opportunities, employees will stop trying to make improvements and continue to perform maintenance duties.

2. Provide tools to share trends, fresh ideas and a diversity of thought.
Depending upon the size of your company and department, it may be best to review ideas on a weekly call, use instant messaging, post in a Google+ circle or have discussions in a private LinkedIn Group. Find out which platform is not an administrative burden and one that truly helps your team connect.

3. Allow employees to discover best practices away from their desk.
Introduce colleagues to other leaders within your organization who add value to your company. Include opportunities within your budget for individuals to attend conferences or events to learn best practices. Support employees who want to volunteer and participate in professional organizations.

The future success of your company depends upon the ability of teams to collaborate to create the most effective solutions. Keep in mind this quote, “Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success.” - Unknown

Checkers or Wreckers: NASCAR Driver, Brad @Keselowski's Twitter Press Conference #TPC

When I arrive at the race track, my heart beats faster and I can't wait for the engines to start. Tonight I was excited to attend the first Twitter press conference coordinated by Brad Keselowski. For those of you who aren't familiar with NASCAR or the Nationwide races yet, Brad grew up in a racing family and is a respected driver for Penske Racing. He joined Twitter in May of 2009.

In a green-white-checker finish, on-air racing personalities often mention that it is either checkers (you win) or wreckers (you wreck and lose).

Here are some good and not so great moments of tonight's Twitter Press Conference:

Wreckers:
Brad started the press conference using the web application of Twitter. There isn't anyone who monitors an active social media presence that would have recommended it. There are too many tweets to follow and you miss out on finding out who the real influencers are by not using a more robust social media tool. During the chat, Brad switched to Twitter for iPad and still missed out on some opportunities to maximize his time during the chat session.

Checkers:
The concept was like other Twitter chats, except that Penske Racing set up guidelines for the media to be able to ask him questions directly first. Fans were encouraged to tweet to any media member about specific questions that they had. Brad also introduced each media person that he took questions from to the fans. I liked this aspect, because it brought a level of professionalism to the chat.

Wreckers:
Active Twitter fans are used to a fast-paced chat session. When Brad tweeted answers or comments during the chat, he usually didn't use the pre-determined #TPC hashtag. He would also just reply directly to a person. If you weren't following that person, you may have missed the tweet too. This made it difficult for fans to follow the tweets. It also made it seem at first as if Brad wasn't participating or answering any questions from the media.

Checkers:
Brad was extremely transparent about any question that he chose to answer from the media. My favorite question was asked by Bob Pockrass with SceneDaily.com: If you win at the Brickyard, how long does your kiss of bricks last and how long before you wash your lips? This translates well with his target audience. By genuinely connecting with the media and his fans, the #TPC tweets reached 134,996 people during the most active part of the chat session.

Based on Brad's work ethic, I know that his next Twitter Press Conference will be faster with even better results.
